The Nature of the Monday-Night Choir

Having been dropped from the Monterey Peninsula College catalog after the Spring 2010 semester, we have continued on our own, and have performed three concert programs as an independent ensemble.

Even though we are no longer an MPC class, a choir is only as good as its individual voices. Therefore, I continue to treat the The Monday-Night Choir rehearsals as a class as well as a choir.

We spend time learning good singing techniques and how to produce a beautiful sound. We work on expanding our vocal range and capability.

We learn the art of good ensemble singing.

We learn how to sing different styles of music so that Mozart doesn't sound like Johnny Cash, and vice verse.

We learn what is important for a good performance in front of
an audience.

Essentially, everyone's musicianship improves over the course of the "semester."

Also, this choir is a group of very nice people, and many choir members become very good friends.

Musical Styles

Since you can only learn how to do different kinds of music by doing different kinds of music, I plan each concert program to include a variety of styles. Our Spring, 2011 program, for example, was:
        – "That's Amore"
       the Beatles' "When I'm Sixty-Four"
       the folk song "Maryanne"
a very cool arrangement of the spiritual "I Want Jesus to Walk with Me," and
       the Mozart "Alleluia"
